Hi Tom,
An OCU is used to teach airforce pilots how to fly an aircraft and which tactics for performance and weapons are best to use.

Cheers Mike

As Mike says, OCUs were, and are, an important part of the RAF. Whenever a new type is introduced or crew are transferring to a different type from what they are used to, (ie Harrier Pilots going onto Tornados etc) then they would be sent to an OCU for conversion and type training. They are also used when a current type recieves an update that can affect it's handling or operation.

There's a little confusion between OCUs and OEUs (Operational Evaluation Units - 41(R) Sqn, 206(R) Sqn); the latter do development/testing/introduction to service.

OCUs provide training to aircrew, be it those new to type (post Advanced Flying Training, or coming from a tour on another aircraft fleet), or refresher training to those returning from other duties who have flown the type before.
