A police officer says he was lucky to escape serious injury after he was set upon by a mob of Rangers fans. Ranger’s fans attempt to cause him serious harm but a rangers fan saves him! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7404185.stm And on a personal level, even more frightening for my wife, SHE WAS THERE! She was on a course and witnessed the going’s on at the railway station, the entire station erupting in to song. She had to move to the rear of the platform to a safer place. At one point she had to shut the windows on the train because the noise was so load. She said the thing that struck her was how tribal it all was. She's not wrong, the combination of support for a team and all day alcohol consumption seems to drag up the tribal territorial warlike nature within some people. For some of course it's far to close to the surface. My wife remarked how shocked she was by the behavior of some of the more mature fans; men aged 40 plus chanting and behaving badly, staggering down the street totally inebriated. Luckily she didn't see any real violence. |
