Hi all,
I'm considering getting a new MP3 (you can get them relatively cheap); around 8GB imported from hong kong would cost me only £20. Only thing is does anyone know if these have the ability to have play lists like on ipods or are they setup completely differently? II don't know how they work compared to ipods (cheapest of which is a 4GB at £70 odd). Thanks for the advice on this, Pete |

Hi Pete,
Are you talking about getting one like this: ? If so then personally I wouldn't recommend them based on having owned a couple of different ones. I found that they kept cutting out at random points, probably due to running off a single AAA battery and I don't remember being able to setup a playlist. They are handy as they can just be connected up to any PC rather than needing a cable like the iPods do. I can't recommend the iPod classic highly enough though. About £140 and under for an 80gig unit and it has a great quality video playback screen as well as the usual iPod stuff |

I would second RAS' recommendation of the iPod. You will obviously be paying a premium for the brand, but they earned their reputation as the best MP3 player.
Apparently this is a good(cheaper) alternative to the iPod: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Zen-V%2B-8GB-Playback/dp/B000LXXGZW/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209739158&sr=8-12 |

You can get 4GB players of that variety from eBuyer for a little over £30. For the price they are fine but don't support many functions and you are usually limited to play order in the order the files were recorded to the disk since they only have a basic file system.
Wouldn't recommend getting something from HK unless you are prepared for the possibility of paying import tax and VAT at customs and also the fact that you will probably doing away with any sort of warranty since it wouldn't be worth your while to send it back even if you could guarantee a refund...

Well, I'm keeping an eye out on ebay for some deals on ipods. Obvousily I've learnt not to listen to it in public places (well maybe not all). The only thing I don't like about the ipod is there is no radio :'(

I have an IPOD Nano and highly recommend it. Fantastic sound. I have a sterio with an IPOD docking station so it's a must have.

Some classic iRiver players going at the moment (far better sound, the 140 was a classic in its own right) and they have radios.

Magic, do they have play list features?
Pete PS: They look like good deals. BTW: I will be wanting to purchase brand new for warranty reasons! |

The IHP-140 was one of the best (if not the best) mp3 players as far as sound quality is concerned ever made. Yes they have extensive playlist features and the iRiver models can be used with Rockbox firmware which offers even more functions.
If you're looking for brand new warranties then ebay or Hong Kong is not really the place to look at...
