Seems the last of this generation is slowly fading away into history now, Bill Stone has died at 108, only 3 Great War veterans are alive today. Just goes to show how much of a long and healthy lives these men deserve, it took guts to do what they did back in 1914 & 1915.

Such a shame to see another one go. Amazing how long they have lived and what they have been through!
I'm still very grateful for another of the veterans (Henry Allingham) to always come to our school every year

Ah Henry Allingham he was in the RFC yes? Harry Patch is a personal hero for me, the only living WWI Infantry man that fought in the Trenches at Pilkem.

Rest in Peace Bill, you have given great credit to all those that fought among you, all those that serve in the armed forces for the UK at present and of course us.
Lest we forget. |

Many Thanks,
Ryan There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician, the other is an artist in love with flight. |

Henry Allingham was not in the RFC, but in the Navy like Bill Stone. However, he became a founder member of the RAF on 1st April 1918 with the merger of the Royal Naval Air Service (of which he was a member) and the RFC. No member of the RFC survives - the last was William Young who passed away in 2007. The surviving (at time of service) British veterans are Henry Allingham (RNAS/RAF), Harry Patch (Army), and Claude Choules (RN, later RAN and Australian citizen). Ned Hughes also served in the Army before the armistice, but did not see active service during the war. |

Rest in Peace.
IIRC, wasn't he the last surviving member of the Navy from WWI? Best regards, Vulcan. |

As I mentioned, there is still Henry Allingham, who was RNAS before he became part of the new RAF on 1st April 1918, and the (now Australian) Claude Choules. So as it stands, two Army, and two Navy (one of which also RAF), and no RFC. |

My condolences. Rest in Peace. You died for our country, but not till you lived the life you solely deserved.
