    Posted: 11 Sep 2015 at 11:17am

This question relates to procedures to adopt when arriving at a secondary airfield where the approach is only ILS DME + NDB or perhaps NDB +DME; that is say, where RNAV/ GNSS appraches are not available. (For example, I am looking at the star chart and IAC for Cardiff, UK)

Looking at the approach charts you seem to be directed to fly to the airfield (meaning more or less directly over the airfield at 3000 ft ) then depart on a heading for a number of miles ,  (279 deg for 8 miles in the case of Cardiff RWY 12) following which a turn to the right will bring one onto the ILS approach.

My question is, do pilots actually fly to a point above the airfield as a procedure or do they ‘cut the corner’ and fly directly to the end of the out bound leg before the turn procedure.

(Does this question make sense?)

I hope no one minds if attach some Cardiff charts from the web.

You fly the procedure as published - you don't "cut the corner" as that could end you up in conflict with other traffic not on the procedure, or terrain - which is the entire point of the procedure.

So, if you're flying the NDB/DME for RWY 12 at Cardiff

(as per this one from the AIS:  http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadbasic/pamslight-E5357456743473288E606D17333EC794/7FE5QZZF3FXUS/EN/Charts/AD/AIRAC/EG_AD_2_EGFF_8-4_en_2013-06-27.pdf)

You'll call up ATC, request the procedure, then you'll fly direct to the CDF NDB.  It's a good idea to approach from a direction which sets you up for the outbound leg (291 for Cat A).

When you pass overhead the beacon, you'll call beacon outbound, and fly that out to 8NM before you start your procedure turn back onto 121.

You can't skip to the end of the outbound leg - for a start, you won't know where that is if you're not on 291 outbound from the beacon - so you could conflict with terrain or other aircraft.

Then you'll call base turn complete when you're back onto 121, and start your descent at 8NM.

Same for the ILS/DME/NDB - call beacon outbound and fly the procedure.

Thank you very much Slopey - a beautifully clear explanation which must apply to Cat C&D aircraft as well.

No more short cuts for me in future!
