Historically the Earth's magnetic filed has reversed many times, with the last flip taking place 780,000 years ago. Well for a while now scientist's have suspected that another flip was on the way. Now it seems that flip might be sooner than we anticipated.
It seems that our magnetic field is weakening ten times faster than we thought and magnetic North is moving further toward Siberia. The current estimate is that the flip could commence in approximately 2000 years from now. Now of course, there will be those that slither around in the lower levels of the internet, where the toxic sludge of conspiracy theory and paranoia abound, who will claim it spells doom and gloom and that the suns super intense radiation will fry us all. You will probably hear stuff like, "the government know about it but are keeping it from us". Or, "they know it will destroy humanity and are using claims of global warming to distract us from imminent irradiation from the solar wind". Don't believe a word of it. Geological history tells us that during previous reversals there were no mass extinctions or evidence of radiation damage at all. It seems our atmosphere is very good at shielding us from radiation during the reversal and subsequent weakening of the magnetic field. Power grids and communications are another matter though. Disruption to these vital services could occur. But as the following article courtesy of Scientific American points out, technology will have advanced greatly in 2000 years. The technology to cope with a magnetic-field reversal should be child's play. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/earth-s-impending-magnetic-flip/ |

From what I've read, the reason for the current weakening is a large anomaly currently residing under South America. Animals that navigate using the Earths magnetic field may find themselves a little off course in the future.

There will be herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across Clapham Common.

Well, I guess if it's going to be at least 2000 years before a reversal, the birds will probably have time to adapt to the inevitable anomalies. It's also possible of course that the reversal will stall for now. It's not for certain that a reversal will for definite take place. Sometimes that happens apparently. |
