Flight Director and Auto pilot

   I can't seem to get the flight director to work in the DC-8.  What am I missing?  The horizontal bar (showing climb or descent) doesn't work at all unless I'm on an ILS.  Also, I will track the GPS on auto pilot but I have to switch the nav select knob straight ahead then turn it to the right again and again to have it correctly track the course.  Otherwise it drifts quite badly.  I would appreciate any help.  I have many other issues with the DC8 but I will continue searching the forum for answers.
