    Posted: 20 Sep 2013 at 10:24am

The RAF's last Vickers VC10 jetliners will complete their final mission later after 47 years of service.

The two aircraft took off from RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, at 10:00 BST and will refuel several planes air-to-air before landing at 14:05.

They are to be dismantled and replaced by a fleet of new Voyager A330-200s.

Wing Cdr Ronnie Trasler said it meant the base's 101 Squadron would still be at the forefront of air-to-air refuelling for "many years to come".

On Wednesday the Princess Royal attended the base for the consecration parade of the squadron's new standard, which also marked the end of service life of the VC10.

Absolutely, a beautiful plane and second only to Concorde for speed for an airliner.

Let's hope some will be preserved in flying condition.

A preserved flying VC10 has been discussed, but is unlikely. The Vulcan is an iconic aeroplane, yet struggles to attract enough funding. Relatively few are familiar with the VC10, it isn't a "display" aeroplane in the sense the Vulcan can be, and doesn't meet modern pax requirements either.

Shame to see them go, but there's only so much mileage in a design over 50 years old.

I resent that, I'm nearly 60 and still going strong...ish.

It would be a shame for them not to grace our skys again.

Perhaps JF could do one. I have David Chesters' VC10 but it's showing it's age as good as it is.

Perhaps JF could do one, after the Britannia of course. Wink Martyn. Wink

As long as JF don't let the developers use generic sounds. The gear retraction (from the cockpit) for a start as a clue!
