The first manned, hydrogen-powered plane has been successfully tested in the skies above Spain, its makers say.

The small, propeller-driven craft, developed by aviation giant Boeing, made three short flights at an airfield south of Madrid, the company said.

It was powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which produce only heat and water as exhaust products.

The tests could pave the way for a new generation of greener aircraft, the company said.

Boeing's chief technology officer John Tracy said the flights were "a historical technological success" and "full of promises for a greener future".

wow, hydrogen powered aircraft already...impressive Clap

looks like a glider they've jus shoved an engine onto LOL
Fair play to Boeing though, although it will take some time i imagine to create a commercial hydrogen powered AC.

That's the way of the future! Congrats to Boeing on this one, hope they'll find ways to adapt the system to their commercial aircraft as well, hopefully before we run out of petrol

Not a very good proposition for larger airliners, just light aircraft.

fuel cells good replace APU's though.

Although the test had been successful, the firm said it did not believe fuel cells could be the primary power source for large passenger aircraft.

However, it could be used as a secondary source of energy for large planes, according to Nieves Lapena, the engineer responsible for the test flights, but this may take some time to develop.

But you are right though Dumpy, once they said it was impossible to travel faster than 30mph, then Stephenson built his rocket. Once they said it was impossible to travel faster than sound, then they broke the sound barrier. Once they said it was impossible to land on the moon, then Apollo 11 proved them wrong. Now they say it's impossible to travel faster than light...

Didn't the Soviet Union fly a military Tu-155M-ON that was hydrogen powered back in the 80s? It was liquid hydrogen though.
