Just something to think about 767nutter, is the fact that you won't be able to overclock the 5970 as far as the 5870, due to heat problems (I'm assuming it's gonna be air cooled?)
You could probably end up with considerably better performance in FSX if you get a 5870 and simply overclock it (very easy to do with VGA's) for other games.

A standard clocked 5870 is going to power FSX without breaking sweat, no real need (certainly for FSX) to overclock it at all...

That's not what I said. I meant for him to compromise by purchasing a 5870 which will perform a little better in FSX, but he could overclock it for other games so it would be closer to the performance of the 5970.
However, if he is overclocking the CPU, it might be worth overclocking the VGA. I have my 8800 Ultra overclocked (about 70MHz on GPU, 100 on RAM and shaders), and my i7 at 4.45GHz. The VGA is still a massive bottleneck though. The CPU hardly breaks a sweat in FSX, it's the VGA that's holding it back. When I OC the VGA, I notice the CPU usage increases greatly, along with performance.
You can tell (roughly) if there's a benchmark by looking at the CPU usage monitor. If it's not mostly level at 100% in FSX (at least on the first core), then something is bottlenecking the system.
With NV cards, you can set profiles to automatically overclock when running certain games, so saves a lot of hassle. Not sure about ATI.

Thanks Odai, i am probably going to get the 5870, i was just thinking about the other two GPUs as i will play other games on the pc aswell, ( i don't have xbox360, ps3 etc, and probably never will ) but Matt N said it would probably be better to get the 5870, wait until the 5870 comes down in price, then buy a 2nd one for the pc. However will have ring up OCUK and find out what make the 5870 is,

Montiors; people are saying there is no point in 2 or a dual gpu(s) unless you are going to use high res and high AA, i read in PC Pilot that unless a resolution of at least 1920 x 1200 is going to be used then FSX will not make use of the extra gpu, but what is the normal resolution that is used on monitors 22" and above?
There must be some people on here that have a 22"+ and if possible can you tell me what resolution you use for best performance and best views? Cheers

1680x1050 is pretty normal on 22" and above.
You'll always get the best picture at the native resolution of the monitor - i.e. running a 1680 x 1050 monitor at any other resolution will looked blurred. Performance depends on your PC CPU and Graphics card. FSX is CPU limited pretty much - the faster the CPU, the faster it'll go. Graphics card is a factor up to a certain point, but FSX won't use an SLI/xFire setup effectively so it's pretty pointless. |

thanks Slopey, i just don't want to buy a good monitor 22"+ and find out the best resolution to use would be 1920 x 1200,do you know what is standard res for a 24" ? |

for 22" I would get nothing less than 1920 x 1080, thats what I'm using now (£160 asus, so not expensive). If you get a 26" widescreen you will get 1920 x 1200 resolutions (our iiyama run at that res) If you are getting a new monitor, don't get anything less than 1920 x 1080 and make sure it has HDMI input aswell as DVI, it gives you more options

I thought all 22" monitors were 1680x1050?
I had no idea same size monitors could have varying screen resolutions.

However, it seems panel manufacturers are moving more and more toward 16:9 ratio screens (bah!) and full HD ratio's so 1920x1080 is quite common at 22" now.

At 22" anything above 1650 might be a little hard on the eyes if you're doing stuff aside from gaming. Also, you'll be able to drive 1680 better than 1920, and you don't end up with one of those silly widescreen 16:9 ratios, which are fine for films, but silly for other things (bit wide for web browsing for example).
If you want to get 3 and a TripleHead2Go, you can't drive that above 5040, so no point going higher than 1680 on each monitor, and they must support a 57Hz refresh rate (mine don't, and I'm stuck at 3xxx something - not pleased!). |

Unless you are looking at the ATI 5000 series cards (Eyefinity), which will do 3 x 1920x1200 (and more)

But TH2Go doesn't support anything above 5040.

Nope, but Eyefinity from ATI runs triple monitors (future one will run 6 monitors)
