In a shock move designed to keep the competition on their toes, Atlantic Bridge have added two Soviet-era aircraft to their fleet. The jets will be based at Talagi in Northern Russia, where their high speed and STOL rough field performance will be well suited to speedy regional operations. The move comes as Atlantic opens its third base of operations across the other side of the Atlantic, at John F Kennedy International.
Speaking at the ceremony where the Yak-40's repaints were unveiled, Atlantic founder Al 'Chock' Bradbury joked with long serving AI pilot Wendy Timecomes: 'Surely even a moron like you can't bend the undercarriage on something that is built like a tractor. But if you do, you're fired.'

How do you like that Yak-40? I've been eyeing it, but unfortunately it's only for FS9. Looks pretty neat though! And I like the fact the developer did all 3d gauges :)

As far as the FS9 Yak-40 goes, it's among the best add-ons you can get, although its lack of wider popularity with simmers probably doesn't reflect its quality, because of the slightly obscure subject material in comparsion to Boeings and Airbuses. I'd compare it favourably with the Aeroworx B200 and the PMDG 747 in terms of fidelity and looks and in fact it probably has a better virtual cockpit and more functionality than either of those if I'm honest. There is eventually going to be an FSX version of it by the way, but they do not want to simply port the FS9 version over, so they are having to remodel it and redo the gauges.
One thing that is particularly good about it is the manual, which is in a two-column side by side Russian/English text format, so it can teach you the Russian and teach you how to fly it too, because at 124 pages it's about as comprehensive a manual as you can get. There is even a translation chart for all the many Russian co-pilot's phrases, which lists the WAV file names in the sound folder so you can play the sound files and learn what they mean. Which means that it's a useful aircraft to have if you fancied flying any other Russian aircraft, simply because of that excellent manual.
As far as systems go, you actually get two versions in the package, a full on realistic Yak-40 and a 'lite' version, but even the full on Russian one can be customised from within FS to have either Russian or English avionics, and they are about as realistic as you could possibly hope for, so if you are the kind of simmer who likes to learn new things and the complexities of real aircraft, the Yak will be right up your street, because it can simulate obscure stuff such as APU fires and all that kind of thing. The cockpit is lovely but weird if you are used to western aircraft.
For 17 quid it's a bargain; with 330 mph speed and the ability to land on a 2,000 foot grass field (you wanna see the wings shake and vibrate when you take off from grass - looks cool), it's well suited to Air Hauler too, where it comes in at just less than 6 million and carries 5,500lbs of cargo with full fuel (which takes it about 900 miles with a good wind). But be sure you really want a complex and faithful copy of the real aircraft with its 40 year-old vintage, because it is definitely that, it even simulates all three electrical systems on the real aircraft.
Oh and the support forum is good and there is a repaint package available for it too.
