Doomed Chernobyl reactor to be buried in giant steel coffin
It's about time! Leaving a few billion curies of nuclear material lying around in a pile of rubble without a containment is not a very good idea.
If they had had the good sense to have built a containment in the first place, this would not be in the news and only 1/10 of 1% of the worlds population would have a clue where or what Chernobyl is.
The poor design of the RBMK reactor and the flawed safety culture (read none) that existed there are separate issues. Even given that the accident might still have occurred, if there had been a containment and it had worked, the Chernobyl event would have been no more than a Three Mile Island.
TMI was an econimic disaster for the utility, a setback for commercial nuclear power and an ongoing news event - no more than that. Chernoby was a human and environmental as well as an economic catastrophe on a massive scale, the effects of which are still being felt.

That's taken long enough! Pleased they're getting there though. 100 years doesn't sound too long though.
Instead of governments blowing £20 billion on things like the Olympics, they should instead fund projects like that, that make a real difference. Best regards, Vulcan. |
