Have you guys tried the new AVG 8 Free?
It'd even better than 7.5, even includes a free spyware scanner.
Well worth a look.

Thanks for that Martin!
Have been putting off totally removing Norton from my old PC and getting something like this and now seems the right time!
Thanks again

Yeah, I get it for free because I have 7.5 :)
Although if you have a feature off, the link scanner for instance, it will keep bugging you to turn it back on again! |

Hi Martin,
I have used AVG since ...I can't remember.
I too had 7.5 so downloaded 8.0. Excellent value for FREE.
Can't understand why people pay for such software.
Well done for highlighting it.
Regards

Norton/Symantec - I have always found them hard to use, full of issues and bugs and a right pain to properly and fully uninstall - I will never use them again. I use Avira AntiVir which is free and seems to do a good and reliable job without all the rubbish that Norton/Symantec supply.

So do the rest of us... AVG 7.5 Free is... Free.
AVG 8.0 Free is... Free.
Warning though, I ran a scan this morning and it locked up my PC. I'll have another go tomorrow it may have been a random glitch. If not I'm sure they will fix it pronto.

Yes I know, it baffles me too, complete rip off.

It's using 83% of my resources! Don't know why, but it'll have to go.
It's not scanning anything, just sitting there.

No I have the internet security, not the virus checker, otherwise I would have the free version.

It's not doing anything like that for me, just as smaller footprint as the old version.
Just the one lock up, I'll scan again later to test again.

FSX was loading at 3%... However, I've reinstalled and all seems well.

The pay version gives you more extensive firewall/browsing/security features than the free version...
Howevever, the free version is quite good in itself...

It's only in the last few years AVG has actually become worth the hard disk space. Earlier versions were a joke.
Best regards, Vulcan. |

Yes it does, but for most of us with a decent router with a built in hardware firewall, a software firewall isn't required. Most router's advise not installing a software firewall if you are using the routers hardware firewall, although the XP firewall doesn't pose a problem.

In case anyone encounters the same issue, the lockup I was getting was related to GPU driver. It seems the new AVG GUI required the latest driver form ATI.

No idea magic, but it was locking up every time I ran a full scan. I installed the latest driver on a whim and it fixed it. Several scans without and it locked up every time, installed driver and now it works.
No idea why such a simple GUI should require the latest driver, a minor glitch that upset it I suppose.
Trouble is my desktop resolution won't stay at the setting I prefer now and I have to manually set the resolution every time I boot up.
