That's quite sad really, but I think it was inevitable.

The business model was wrong from the outset.

Release a full-featured sim on the market, work with the community to perfect it and the aftermarket to provide third party addons for it.

Not: Release a half-finished early alpha; then sloooowly bring it up to half-decent, then bar the aftermarket from releasing anything unless it was through the approved system?

I really don't know how they ever thought it would work?

It's not really surprising, as Ian says... Disapprove

It`s sad to see the longest running flight sim platform in the computer industry come to an end, a platform that gave life to a third party industry Just Flight being one of them.
Unless someone can pick up the commercial right`s to MSFS then this could be the end of the most successful product outside of windows in terms of lifespan.

L-M based Prepar3d on the same core engine (ESP) and it seems to going from strength to strength.

Other than that one might argue that the engine has had its time, and encountered difficulties based on the choices the ACES team made about future progress of CPU and GPU tech that proved to be wrong.

This is, of course, the second commercial failure of a revised version of FSX - `Microsoft Flight` was an unmitigated disaster for many of the same reasons as FSW. Shame Dovetail didn't learn the lessons.

But it has to be said the market today is in a far stronger position than 10-12 years ago, X-Plane has made a massive leap, Aerofly FS2 is looking increasingly interesting, DCS satisifies the shoot 'em up crowd and there are a handful of other alternatives.

Prepar3d services a different market, but at least in the academic versions provides entry-level access to ab-initio aviators - we use it in our flight club for `rainy-day` flying, local and distant familiarisation training and instrument practice. You couldn't do that ten years ago with FSX (although many of the addons we are using originated with that platform).

The loss of a single platform really isn't doing any harm. Although how one might wish for some of the enhancements from FSW to be be brought to FSX..!

Forgive if I don`t share the enthusiasm for the demise of a platform that the flight sim industry was built on, before I mite add P3D or XP, such as PMDG , AIROSOFT, JUST FLIGHT, A2A and more, and web sites built on supporting it Avsim, flightsim, to name just a few.

FSX hasn't `demised` . Only FSW.

FSX enjoyed a full, featured life that outlived the development team by a decade or more.

Now it has been proven beyond all doubt that it was the commercial proposition that was wrong and NOT the core values of the sim - or simmer - maybe there will be room for someone else to take on the mantle
of development of FSX into the 64-bit age - this time with the help of the aftermarket.

There's a development license going begging for the gaming market...Thumbs Up

Only if DTG are willing to sell the commercial licence, but that my be a legal minefield with Microsoft we just don`t know, only DTG has the legal rites to develop MSFS in any form they choose.
I don`t think FSX:SE will be pulled from sale on steam, only FSW is my reading of the future.

AFAIK FSX:SE and the associated DLC will remain on sale for the foreseeable future, and LM have no interest in purchasing rights to an entertainment product, as you'd expect for an organisation such as theirs.

Almost the very definition of an obsolescent product in software...  Still on sale, but of ever-decreasing interest to the aftermarket - simmer or developer.

You can still buy earlier versions of Windows, but the story of those old versions is still the same.
Same argument.
Just because you can buy something doesn't make it any less `dead`. I bought a restored R80 G/S BMW last year
http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/specpages/R80G-S.htm

My favourite `zombie apocalypse` bike as, like the good old Landie, it will still be running after the EMP brings all the new-fangled screens to fizzing halt, can actually run on duck p!ss and string - and all the things you need to maintain quickly before the hordes arrive to bite a hole in your head is on the `outside`. Big smile

FSX is like that, it has all its quirks and foibles but will still sell after it's `dead`precisely because it has failed to be replaced in the gaming market - although X-Plane-with-addons is now pretty close and L-M's rule intepretation and tolerance of the braindead generation buying into it with daddys' plastic is most, er, prosaic... Ermm

Yes A bit like the gaming PC was suppose to be dead by now, but thanks to steam keeping a dead platform alive hardware manufactures are still making hardware for the gaming PC, for how long no one knows.
