Airbus collection (A300 Autoland)

   Hi there.
I read in the manual that an autoland function is possible using the autopilot.
Till now I've always manually landed the A300 & A310, but after reading this decided to give the autoland a tryout.
Well, on approach to Gatwick airport, cleared to, I flicked the approach switch (having already tuned all correct frequencies and having intercepted the localizer etc) and my A300 dived towards the ground like a dart!
Why should this have happened and why didn't the autoland work?
