Hi all, I've decided to
try out painting a livery for the first time and have an issue I need some help
with. I decided on a Braniff
International Jellybean Livery for my first time since the majority of the
plane is one color. After some comical trial and error I've got most of it
figured out. The issue I'm now
having is the aft fuselage section is showing a pure black logo font and the
front and center sections are showing more of a faded and weathered font. I
copied and pasted as a layer the same picture of the "Braniff
International" font for each of the sides respectively. (Each side has its
own slant angle) I'm at a loss on trying to figure this out. I think it might
have to do with the alpha channel but not positive. I've been working
on it for almost 3 weeks now and am almost finished. My last steps are to get
the name along the sides to color match and outline the doors. When it's
finished I plan to upload it on avsim to share with everyone interested. I just found the
forum topic of how to post screenshots here and not sure I got it down yet but
I’ll try to post a pic to show you if you’re interested in seeing my progress
or need it to see what I’m talking about. Also, I’m exporting the files to .dds using Gimp 2 and using the RGBA8 format. Is this the right one or should I be using another? It took a few attempts to get a working dds file and this is the first one I got that actually put paint on the plane in FSX. Regards, Marc

Thanks Yankeeromeo!!! I'm rather proud of it since it's my first ever paint job.
I kept all the PSD files layerd and saved them so after I get all the bugs worked out all I have to do is change the fuselage colors and N numbers to get the rest of the fleet. I'm hoping to have at least this one uploaded to avsim by the end of next week.

Nice paint :-)
As for the non-faded/weathered lettering, this looks like those letters are on a different layer to the other letters. It's like they're sitting on a layer above the weathering effects layers. Normally, you would have the paint layer at the bottom, then the lettering and then all the other details and effects on top. |

Thanks Paul!!!
I never thought about the order of the layers being an issue; that's probably the cause. I do remember just adding a layer and going for it and not paying any attention to the order of them. I plan on painting the outline around the doors today and I'll check it out then. Either way, your lesson of paying attention to the order of the layers is a good one; and I thank you for it. Regards, Marc |

Yankeeromeo, they
look easy enough. I'm willing to give it a go. A couple of issues I have are:
1) I don’t know how to paint over the windows to make just 3 on the side of the
fuselage on the MPA. I have some ideas
how; but haven’t experimented with it yet.
2) I can’t positively make out the number on the nose gear door and can’t
see the N number in this pic. (I think it’s 2813 on the gear door) 3) I
did an internet search on Airliners.net and Bing for more pics of this MPA
plane and came up with nothing. Can you
give me more info to improve my results getting more pics of it? 4) I don’t know how to give the bare metal
surfaces that polished look. If you’re
looking for a shiny new 109RD I can’t do it at the moment. I found a Painters Workshop forum topic at flightsim.com
that’s been most helpful with my first endeavor of painting. I remember there being a topic in that form
about the adding shine to bare metal but I haven’t gotten it down yet. I’ll
research it some more and keep trying.
The best I can do right now is give you a dingy, dull, and weathered
plane. I want to finish
my Braniff project first and then I’ll start on the MPA. Let’s save Airlift for after I learn how to
do polished metal surfaces. |

Hello Folks,
thank you very much for your work, time and Talent Unfortunately i have no more infos about the Michigan Peninsula Airways DC-8. In fact, i need a DC-8-43 cargo version, N & C id numbers, any colors, i choose the Airlift one because, i like the metal shine, and i thought it is pretty simple to do,but... So, Braniff project first then... Maybe some J.F Folks or any paint specialist could give some cues for the painting job Anyway, enjoy your Braniff venture |

Paul Golding your sugestion was spot on! I did have the order of the layers mixed up and after corecting them all the fuselage fonts matched! I have a few details to fix and then she'll be ready to upload. I got the door trim finished and decided to put some red trim along the backside of the spoilers and am working on getting them uniform.
Here's some screenshots of her now... |
