The Douglas C-74 Globemaster was ordered in 1942 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Knowing that US Forces would need a heavy logistics capability if the campaign to stop the Japanese onslaught in Asia. Douglas based the aircraft on their new DC-4/C54, however problems and modifications meant that it did not fly until 1945. As a result the large order envisaged was cancelled and only a small number were built. The early aircraft had seperate cockpit bubbles for the two pilots but the crews hated it and it was modified to a single canopy. The C-74 served for sometime until supplanted by the even bigger C-124 Globemaster II. One aircraft was used by a civil freight company and became stranded for some years in Italy. It was featured in the movie " The Italian Job" where it played the part of a transport for gold bullion! This then is the C-74. Seen here departing Offut AFB......
On the ramp starting the engines taxying out....(yes there are AI C-135s operating here!) final checks...(no idea why the 2 Libyan C-130s are there.) lift off cleaning up turning onto course cruising home AP engaged, time for some coffee. thanks for viewing. |
