Hi,
A friend of mine called earlier to warn me that he'd been the subject of fraud over the weekend. His CC company rang him to say they'd stopped several suspicious transactions that had occurred in Egypt. According to the CC company, the most likely places this occurred was at a petrol station. According to the CC company, Shell and BP petrol stations are most likely to be involved in skimming, as these particular stations are being increasingly owned by terrorists organizations. He'd been to one of these just a couple of days prior. Further to this, they'd said that they're getting quite hi-tec about it, concealing cameras inside the little bezel that the Chip and Pin units have!!!!! In some cases, they've even been intercepting the buttons you press on the keypad in order to obtain your PIN. The worst part is that the Police apparently don't care and won't investigate, but despite this, the CC company were going to report this anyway. BE CAREFUL PEOPLE! The money they rip off directly funds terrorism. Check the C&P unit carefully, and be sure to conceal the digits as far as possible. As of now, I'm going to be stuffing paper in the unit to try and block any potential cameras before I enter my PIN. You may laugh, but I'm not going to get caught out! If in doubt, don't use your card and pay cash instead. If you have any doubts over the unit, raise it immediately (and make sure other customers in the store hear you). The only way (it seems) this is going to get tackled is through vigilance. There was an incident at a BP has station a couple of months ago where a camera was concealed in the ceiling looking at the keypad of those who didn't cover the unit. The unit you put your card into was plugged into another box that captured the card details in transit. The (censored) will do anything to get your money. Apparently the frauds occur 1 to 2 days after the card was skimmed, in the event the card expires soon. Best regards, Vulcan. |

You must be kidding??? Any evidence of that, apart from a friends words?
The worst part is that the Police apparently don't care and won't investigate.
Surely there would be an uproar if the police didn't bother to investigate serious fraud?

Try his CC company. I think it highly unlikely he would lie about such a thing. If you doubt me, fine, but I know I don't doubt my friend.
You'd think so, but apparently not. Just what do the Police do these days? Best regards, Vulcan. |

Vulcan, so you are suspicious of a couple of a couple of multinational companies. You do surprise me
A trusted friend once told me that he had heard first hand that a terrorist attack was due in London on a certain day and how I should stay away. Funnily enough he was just repeating rumour and it was a load of rubbish |

That's a huge generalisation and something I'm sure the two companies concerned would be very keen to take down a legal route...

I know. I didn't say it, the CC company did. I wouldn't write it if I didn't believe it to be true. Libel, anyone?

Vulcan, Comments like this are not only wrong but very tiresome. Do you now understand that as of last year the Fraud Act placed alot of responsibility into fraud such as this onto banks/credit card companies and the businesses themselves? Glib comments as yours are spoken with absolutely no idea of what Police have to do everyday. Yes, there is a spate of this going on, where I work there were 44 calls made by public to Police in ONE day relating to the incidents you mention from ONE garage (ironically opposite my Police station). However, even if Police were to investigate them all (as we used to, prior to Chip & Pin and the proliferation of this sort of scam) then it would be impossible given the amount of investigation this takes. Want me to investigate this as your being mugged or in a car crash? Thought not. Taxes only pay for so much so unless you willing to double the amount of Police (not PCSO's) then live with it. And just what do Police do these days? Well, I am a response officer who deals with fights, RTC's, burglaries, missing persons, shoplifting, drunken youths, prisoner escorts, and the sorting out of other peoples domestic lives who cannot deal with it themselves. Mostly all of the above in one shift. I am also currently investigating 12 of my own crime reports of varying type and seriousness which I have to juggle with the previous activities. All for £30,000 a year with a 1.9% pay-rise and if I crash when in a call I get prosecuted or if someone deems I use to much force against a suspect I get interviewed under caution and I am duty bound to get involved with an incident while off-duty. If you have an issue with going to these stations, either get your cash from a ATM and pay with cash or WALK. Don't criticize the Police for not investigating something we do not have the time or man-power to do, the same is with Ebay frauds. |

I know you guys have a tough job, and are seriously under staffed/funded. You might like to see another post I made in this forum. It was tongue-in-cheek, but damn politicians and councils take our taxes and give us nothing in return.
There is definitely more the banks could do to stop this, but it seems they're not very inclined. Whilst I appreciate your position, the fact is that if the Police don't nail these crimes, they will continue. If it is going to fund terrorism, then surely the best place to stop it is at the root? Please don't take it personally. Best regards, Vulcan. |

Tell me about it...I had £800 stolen via Paypal/Ebay and have had two calls from the police since making my statement last March. I don't blame the police, as they do have too much work, however I think I've had a pretty pathetic level of service... |

And you even have to run a 35 mile marathon, while protecting the Olympic flame from protesters with fire extinguishers.
You guys are damn fit.
Double the police... YES PLEASE!
As for having the time to investigate credit card fraud... yes the police should investigate such things, and if they haven't got the man power then they bloody well should have.
Fewer millennium domes, no more free Sky TV packages and free cat food for politicians.

Know what you mean Flighty, but they have a right to put on a show, and stage there event. just as you have the right to stage an event if it doesn't contravene any regulations. The protesters also have a right to peacefully demonstrate, as they should in a democracy.
All of the above have the right to stage their events or peacefully demonstrate without harassment or acts of violence perpetrated against them... hence the police presence.
