Hey Guys,

Just a quick one, im want to protect my pc from the harsh world of the internet. as its only used for my Flight Simming i've never felt the need to get anything like Norton or McAfee but now i do. So, which is the best, Norton 2008? or McAfee 2008?

Thanks alot guys.

McAfee.  It does a better job than Norton, and Symnatec (Norton) is incredibly to uninstall if you need to get rid of it.

PS.  Are you wanting Security after what happened with msn? .

Neither, both bloated and heavy on resources.

Nothing wrong with a free offering from AVG or AVAST for your situation.

^^^ I agree.

I'd recommend Avira though. AVG just doesn't jive. It's only €20 for a year!

Best regards,
Vulcan.

NOD32 is the best, I have had Norton, McAfee, and Avast.  Norton resource hungry and a pain to uninstall and not the best protection.  Kaspersky was my last program and very good, but converted to NOD32 and found the best.

I use the free version of AVG. Have been for four years now. Never had any problem. The big boys are viruses in themselves and hog resources IMO.

Spot on, I use AVG, excellent, no need to pay for anything.

Magic’s right, if you want to slow your system down with bloated rubbish go ahead.

Keep your OS up to date with the security fixes, use a good hardware firewall courtesy of your router, I have the windows firewall on as well, and that’s all you need, apart from a spyware killer.

Agreed. In the past 3 years I've had McAfee and Norton protected systems, but for 18 months now have solely used NOD32.

I figure that if I pay, then if something goes wrong I have a bit more comeback as it were with a company I've paid to protect my computer. Peace of mind, if you like.

No more comeback than AVG. If you have an issue with a virus they won't compensate you in any way. If you have an issue with AVG, they will do the same as a paid AV, try and help you, they also have a very good forum for help.

Not that i'm an expert, but in the years I've had AVG, never an issue, never a virus, except one or two that AVG caught and protected me from.

AVG sounds like my best bet then as i also dont want anything heavy on my system.

MartinW Funny enough to say that but last night i updated my (Netgear range MAX ) Router firmwear since the first time i've ever had it and also put Security on my router as i never had in my life. i believe its WPA2-PSK Password protected. Well ever since last night my internet has been playing up. Sometimes my Windows Vista laptop not picking up the router at all or sometimes just wont connect. i have made sure i i set everything so it knows the password and everything but still i just dont pick up the router or it wont connect. so i have to restart for it to pick it up.

The 2 wired PC'S in my house are on the net working like a dream just my Windows Vista laptop and my sister's Vista laptop. Does vista not like the Security i have put on there or have i set up something wrong? Also getting really bad download rates since the update and Security, Im with Virgin Media (Cable) and for the first time ever im getting below 10KBS download rate Shocked

Any idea what i have done wrong or is Virgin media having a bad time again?

Thanks alot guys

I have little experience of wireless, I use a wired network for speed and safety.

Quote Well ever since last night my internet has been playing up.

Take the security off again and try it.

Wireless can still be unreliable, even now. It's partially the companies trying to be "the best" all the time, but failing, and partially the technology itself is rubbish.

Find a good "g" router without all the fancy acceleration rubbish etc.. and use that.

If the standards designers could make 56 Mbps "g" run faster than 54 Mbps, they would have. I haven't found a single "faster than g" (or whatever) product run reliably.

I've got a supposed top-of-the-line 'N' router, with associated card, but that damn thing doesn't run at all for more than about 2 minutes. I get hardware error when I try and ping the access point, but when I run the same equipment on "g" it is out of this world! I can get a signal at the bottom of the garden like that!

I think the major culprit is that they've used the 802.11n draft spec. Uhh - it's "draft" for a reason (I got it to test it - you don't know if you don't try, do you?).

Best regards,
Vulcan.

Windows Live One Care, doesn't slow graphic intensive progaram, either the two mentioned I believe uses too much power.

Some what like a sealed stainless steel box, with five thick concrete steel reinforced rebar walls surrounding it, just to keep flies out.

Well Vulcan. i did take the security off and guess what,,, its gone back to being fast again. But its seems now my router is easy for anyone who wants to steal my internet and use it like its some sort of free internet.

Well the router im ment to have is top of the range £130. I'll take your word for it and find a ''G'' router as the 1 i have now will be quite useless if i cant have security as well as speed. i take it Netgear do ''G'' routers vulcan if so where can i get one? if so the top of the range?

You know the old saying, if they want to break in, they will.

Albeit, regardless of what you use for firewall and virus protection, nothing is 100%  I have talked to folks over the years who had their PC's attacked, whether it be McAffee or Norton, WLOC, to this day, still not compensated.

Wireless?  Read my first sentence.
