It appears that as far as anyone is aware, the US do not actually have any evidence that this guy did anything wrong. Best regards, Vulcan. |

If true... it's effectively torture.
If true... utterly disgusting. Seems the US are intent on exacerbating the bad opinion some have of their nation.

Won't stop the US. They seem to like being hypocrites. US credibility = zero. Best regards, Vulcan. |

I'm sure they have, but probably aren't particularly willing to make it available in the public domain at this time. Maybe they could release the apparently treacherous attention seeking (like Mr Assange, strangely enought) chap to go and extract the files from the various secret nets to which, as an intel analyst, he had access, so wikileaks can then distribute them too. |

That aside. It is really necessary to keep him in such conditions. E.g with the light on at all times? It can't be for security. An IR camera would do just as well. |

Depends on whether what is written by a potentially sympathetic journalist is true. |

Well someone leaked the documents, and whilst I don't support it, it happened and they're out there.
I don't see anyone currently calling for the few papers that were leaked the information to be prosecuted. Let's not forget The New York Times released some of the material in their papers, and they are a US paper, operating on US soil, so why no prosecutions there, or at least some kind of gagging order? There is surely a clear case there at least, in that the paper somehow received classified information and knowingly published them anyway. That at least, doesn't make sense. Best regards, Vulcan. |

Because they didn't steal the information. Pvt Manning is accused of being the chap, who, for some reason or another, abused his privilege of access to the more secret US military computer networks (which normal service personnel don't necessarily have access to), to download and distribute the data illegally, potentially to those with malicious intent (such as the idiot Assange). He was the one who "stole" the information whilst he was bored in Iraq, and distributed it further. In the UK he'd be getting a good seeing to under the Official Secrets Act. As a military chap, I struggle to find any sympathy - and if he's in military custody, I doubt his minders will either. What he's alleged to have done could and may have already cost lives. |

The Pentagon conducted a thorough review of all the material (150 dedicated personnel), and went out of their way to find any death linked to the leaks. They didn't find any.
Maybe, but the paper knew they had classified information and printed it anyway. Not only did they leak the information, they leaked it to the world!!! Pvt Manning leaked it to one organization as far as we know - Wikileaks. On pure numbers alone, the papers did far more damage. They can't claim ignorance either - they knew what they had. Sure - go after Pvt Manning for the original abuse of position etc.. but also nail to the wall the papers that leaked the info. The fact they aren't doing that, suggests that maybe things aren't as they appear. In the UK, the editor is legally liable for anything a paper prints that is illegal, libelous, etc.. Assange could be considered the editor of Wikileaks as he has overall control and the final say. Best regards, Vulcan. |

Yet. When, for example, some loon pick up on the "high value target list" leak, and decides to go and blow him/herself up though at what was previously thought to be a minor installation/base, relatively lightly guarded, and kills a few innocent security guards/bystanders, there will have been.
I don't disagree with you there. Sadly, the mass media has few moral fibres remaining in the main, and there appears little that anyone can do about it once the information's in the public domain. |
