Yes, I have heard of fly by light Alan. Not sure how much research is being done. Although Gulfstream demonstrated it a few years ago. Aparently FBL saves a lot of weight and is regarded as safer.

Saw Just Flight re A380 on the news last night. Congratulations. Had hoped you might have been able to simulate the explosion but guess time was short.

There should be a very long, hard look, at how the apparently faulting generator could result in all FBW computers from failing to respond to any input, and do nothing.

Pointy... Isn't it true that the airbus does have some mechanical control linkages in place, for such an emergency? What control surfaces do they apply to?

A380 doesn't have mech backup. It's electric.

On the A32x/A330/A340 it is manual stab trim and rudder only!

Best regards
Vulcan.

Oh right.

The airline have said though, that the pilots were in full control of the aircraft. So it may be electric, but it worked.

BBC news said the other night, there was a cascade of failures. No more details given in the report though.

Found this...

Primary Flight controls: Back-up Control

Logical evolution of A320 / A340 / A340-600 family:

Full Fly-By-Wire, with a “Back-up” as an additional precaution to

keep control of the aircraft during temporary loss of:

􀀗 all Primary Flight Control computers

􀀗 all Electrical power supply

A320 : full FBW controls, mechanical Back-up (Pitch Trim & Rudder)

A340/A330 : like A320, additional Yaw Damper to improve Dutch Roll

damping even in Back-up mode (BYDU with hydraulic micro generator)

A340-600 : like A340 for pitch, Rudder becomes fully Electrical

(BPS + BCM : Back-up Power Supply + Control Module)

A380 : like A340-600 for Yaw control + BPS+BCM also power

􀀗 Electrical Pitch Back-Up (elevators) linked to side-stick

􀀗 Electrical Roll Back-Up (ailerons) linked to side-stick

􀀗 Pitch Trim (Wheel is replaced by Switches).

Let's just hope the A380 doesn't suffer the gremlins of the A32x.

Best regards,
Vulcan.

In case anyone's interested:

I happened across this when I was searching for information on a cabin/livery refresh of the ex-BMED aircraft. It turns out the aircraft involved in the incident (and the first to receive the makeover treatment in November) was G-MEDJ. This is the aircraft I fly on regularly between Heathrow and Amman. oh how I laughed
