That is one over-rated aircraft.
The only thing that may make it superior is its avionics package, but until they get it into service and into combat, it's only hype. It has inferior weapons because they have to pack them into the fuselage. They didn't count on the fins of the AIM-120B being so large. Ooops. AIM-120B may have a slightly reduced range, but AIM-120C can't manouver nearly as well. They certainly learned a few things from it though - that it stalls in a way they can't get out of easily (almost not at all), and that the flight control systems are rubbish (they lost an airframe due to this). Apparently they've fitted it with a spin/stall recovery chute (model A F-16s had these too until they devised a novel recovery technique which involves idle thrust and a rocking motion in pitch until controlled forward flight is established). Here it is crashing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faB5bIdksi8 Here is an example of poor stall characteristics: http://www.youtube.com/v/qphv_3F4UVA Best regards, Vulcan. |

Am inclined to agree with you Vulcan. The F22 may appear to have superior avionics, if by that you are including the target acquisition systems. But the cost is, well, on the expensive side. To me, the F22 looks like a heavy F15! But I have never flown one so what do I know?
I would speculate the "Avionics" in the Typhoon are every bit as good. Having watched a Typhoon "practising" at Leuchars, I will vouch from a spectators pont of view that the Typhoon would perform handsomely in a fly off Only wish I'd had my handycam with me when this guy was flying, the G pulled looked impressive!
