It will be interesting to see who becomes the next leader of the Labour party. Also
"Mr Brown also announced that the Liberal Democrats had requested "formal talks" with Labour over a deal to form the next UK government." Makes it look like the conservatives don't want to play ball! |

It will be very historic if they pull it off.
This will be a full coalition, with Liberal Democrats sitting around the cabinet table. Not the half-hearted deal from the conservatives.
We haven't seen anything like this since the second world war.
With a full coalition, and both parties sharing similar ideologies and policies, it could work... maybe.

It's not surprising really. Gordon Brown couldn't survive past this election for many reasons.
Either the Lib Dems are playing it smart, trying to put pressure on the Conservatives for some as yet to be agreed point, or because talks rae not going well with the Conservatives and are looking at another option. Was Gordon pushed to enable talks to happen? That is speculation really. Best regards, Vulcan. |

For once I agree with Vulcan,
Brown was dead in the water regardless - the biggest Labour rout since the War - he was never going to survive long. The Lib Dems are playing a dangerous game - after 4 days of negotiation with the Tories, they suddenly start to talk to Labour. That's going to leave the Tory cheese out in the wind, and doesn't do Clegg any favours, but it is more acceptable to the Lib Dem rank and file. Remember that the Liberals can't go to the toilet without taking a vote on it. Whatever deal comes up, their Executive Council has to vote on it (38 members) - if 9+ of them reject it, the deal is off. Then it needs to go to the party rank and file - if 25%+ of them reject it, the deal is off. Decisive government? It'll take the Dems weeks to work out which deal to go with, and Clegg may just have made life much more difficult by giving his own party two options rather than one. BRING BACK SPITTING IMAGE!!!!! |

Nothing of the sort, they said all along that as the Conservatives gained the most seats, it was constitutionally correct for them to attempt to form a government first. Hence they would talk to them first. Not once did they say, or imply that they would only, exclusively talk to the Conservatives. They said all along that they would negotiate with the labour party too.
If the Conservatives aren't offering a deal that's workable, what do you expect the Lib Dem's to do? Leave the country without a viable government???

I'd expect them to announce it wasn't happening, and then go speak to Labour.
But it appears the Executive Council of the Lib Dems trashed the Tory deal anyway, and they told Clegg to phone Labour. That's the problem with the Dems, they're a bit *too* democratic sometimes. Having the 2nd/3rd parties form a government won't play well with the Electorate. As heard on Radio 2 this morning - how come Chelsea won the Premiership when Man U have more seats??? |

I wouldn't! Any negotains involve offer and counter offer. They did speak to the Conservatives first, a deal wasn't agreed, so they spoke to labour. The Conservatives then made another offer in regard to electoral reform. What did you expect, if no deal is looking likely with the Conservatives, break off any noegotiations? Of course not, talks with all three will continue simultaneously, as they should.
But it appears the Executive Council of the Lib Dems trashed the Tory deal anyway, and they told Clegg to phone Labour. That's the problem with the Dems, they're a bit *too* democratic sometimes.
Of course, the Conservatives work that way too, as do labour. Neither brown, Cameron, or Clegg will make the final decision, those in the higher echelons of the parties will decide. It is they that decide the course of these negotiations.
how come Chelsea won the Premiership when Man U have more seats
An inaccurate analogy.
Because the premiership isn't a parliamentary system. the system in this country requires that a party win a certain majority. If you haven't achieved that majority then you haven't won an election. If you don't like it, then support the Lib Dem's policy of proportional representation.
It's also said by sources, that the Conservatives insistance to jump in front of the press, and imply an agreement was close, when it wasn't, irritated the Lib Dem's. Typical conservatives duplicity.

He also said the Labour offer was for a switch to the AV system, without a referendum This is exactly what i said in the other topic, Labour just like to go in guns blazing without seeing whether people want it or not.

The Lib Dem/Con mix will be a full coalition, with Clegg as Deputy PM it would seem from latest reports.
They're going to go for AV, and a referendum on PR I think (but yet to be confirmed). AV will screw minority parties. Best regards, Vulcan. |

David Cameron is PM, abandon all hope and start trembling.
His acceptance speech, laced with lies and dirty promises, is a mere preview of what will show to be a disastrous next few years for the UK.
